My University of Miami Computer Science Major
I just wanted to briefly rant about my Bachelors of Science in Computer Science I currently have from the University of Miami. That is, if you all don’t mind a bit of ranting:
First, my ex-girlfriend went to James Madison University for their (double checking on her website) Interactive Media major and a minor in Computer Science. Allow me to repeat for those of you who read that quickly. A MINOR IN COMPUTER SCIENCE. (I also capitalized every letter for fun. Cause fun is fun).
I can summarize how terrible my Computer Science (major) program was at U of M in one sentence (with the previous statement as a preface): She was doing and learning stuff her Freshman year that I didn’t even start to learn until my Junior year.
Granted, I am a fast learner. And I am very good at problem solving (a must for computer science and any sort of coding application) so much so that I have found an application for this in my current job with Warner Music Group. However, something such as javascript I never even looked at during my entire bachelors degree. I mean, at all. None. Zero. Talk to a programmer, that’s unbelievable.
I would like to think that my “Major” at the University of Miami for Computer Science gave me an adequate “foundation” of learning that would further enable me to freely and easily learn whatever programming language was thrown at me in the “real world”. And, if I sit for a moment and think about this, it is true. I do have this solid foundation layer. However, I am stuck with the unfortunate task of applying for jobs having no real hands-on experience with programming language X or application Y. I am stuck trying to word my resume so that it is obvious that I have the “ability” to pick up whatever I need to easily (the truth, I swear). It’s quite hard.
I would love to work for Google. I would love to do any kind of programming for Apple. I would love to do something that would slow the atrophy of everything I learned from going to a good college for 4 years. But unfortunately, I don’t currently have the experience needed to put together a resume/portfolio that is fully representative of my talents and get a job in that field.
