The Lost Dilemma

with 3 comments

Lost ImageI’ve solved my Lost problem (see last post).

But first, a dream I had last night was really strange. I was checking my website (this is how entertaining some of my dreams get) and some random person had written a post. Very strange indeed, since I’m the only one who can log in and post anything. So, this guy, I don’t remember the name though it ended in last name –kesh, had written a post which was basically a YouTube video. I played it, and it was a video of various animations of a “Distant Light” logo. All of which were very similar, from what I can recall, to the TBS logo animations. Stupid, boring, and nerdy, I know.

Onto the Lost premiere tomorrow. Since I won’t have cable (I’ll have a TV though), I’m going to watch the show at the office! Yay! 60 something inch plasma TV, 5.1 surround sound, DirectTV (HD). Terrific. Just thought I’d share.

I’m also going to wait until my NEXT post to reveal the answer to yesterday’s quote question. Give y’all sometime to think aboot it, eh?

Blue Night Over the Sky, Blue Night Over Me

with 4 comments

I have no internet access at home. Luckily, there is a small cafe nearby that has free wireless, though its too far to reach from my apartment. So I have to actually go there and get a drink to use it. I’ll have my own setup in two weeks. Yes, that’s a 2. Followed by weeks. February 8th is the scheduled installation date for both DirectTV and Comcast’s internet. Wo0t! Also, my car should arrive that week too! Double wo0t! The other thing this implies, is that I will be missing the premiere, as well as the second episode, of Lost. And with no internet to download the show via iTunes, it will be 2 more weeks before I’m all caught up. Boo!

Another negative thing occurred January 25th, this past Friday. No, it wasn’t the fact that I had the day off, silly. That’d be a positive thing. The negative thing is that I completely forgot Amy’s birthday. Especially after saying I’d remember during the week before. So. Amy. Happy belated Birthday.

I finished watching the show Extras which was fantastic. I laughed a lot and would recommend it. There’s only 6 episodes per series, of which there are only 2. Plus they did a special “series finale” episode which was nearly 3 times as long as a regular episode, basically “feature-film” length. All of which are available as a boxed set, yay!

And, I’ve decided to make the title of this post (since the content is random) a quote from a song. See if you can name it! Yay! (Pictures will come once I can actually upload things)

Finally! An Update!

with one comment

I decided the best approach to editing my page without everyone seeing the all intermittent stages was to add a password protect layer. The result is what you see here now. I slapped together a shitty image for a header and modified some theme I found somewhere off wordpress.org. My next attack will be to make some more pages! My good friend Jim and I have tossed around the idea of doing a New Years 2008 performance (we’re way early, I know). I think some feedback would be good, since most of the songs we’ll be performing will be covers. A form of sorts to recommend songs would be cool.

Anyway, there’s still lots more to do. In addition to moving out of this apartment and into my new one tomorrow. I think I’m going to rent a car to transfer my crap. Ok, I need to shower or something. I’ve been at this page all morning so far. Bye!

Wordpress and Moving-Style

with one comment

I’m having some trouble with Wordpress. I really want to update this website, fix up the layout and everything, which I can do. The only problem is I’m editing the files “online”. Which means, if I want to preview a change I made, I have to edit the files that are visible to anybody that visits the site. That’s fine, I guess. I don’t exactly get a ton of traffic or anything. There has to be a way to edit everything offline. There just has to! Anybody know? (I’m talking to everyone that’s included in my “excessive traffic”)

On a personal note, I’m really looking forward to moving into my new apartment, which I have to do this weekend. I have to be out of my temporary place on Tuesday by 11:00 am. Well, I work. So it looks like its gotta be by this Sunday. No big deal. Though, none of my belongings will arrive till later. Oh! I wanted to complain about the mail system at my temporary place. Its very similar to the system my college used. Any incoming packages get delivered to a central hub and then delivered out to the various apartments/dorms. I had a NetFlix movie that was delivered on Saturday. If things arrive too late in the day, the central hub will wait until the next day to make their rounds. In this case it was a Sunday, so they waited until the next day which was, oh shoot, a holiday. So they should have delivered it yesterday, but didn’t. And I have no idea where it is.

Ha, regarding the new apartment: I’m trying to find some online store to buy a whole spice cabinet worth of spices for really cheap. I managed to find guitar strings last night. Also, I’m getting sick. Boo!

“Monstrous” Disappointment

with 5 comments

Cloverfield PosterI’ll keep this rant as short and sweet as possible, its not worth going into to much detail.

Back in August of 2007 I stumbled upon the teaser trailer for a movie, then called nothing more than 1-18-08 which was the release date shown at the very end of the trailer. Over time, numerous viral marketing websites, and abstract working titles, the movie became known by its official name “Cloverfield”. I have been excited for this release date since that first viewing in August. The teaser trailer (and later official trailer) are downloaded to my desktop in the highest HD resolution available for those random “you gotta see this” moments. The movie poster was the background on my iPhone.

I was prepared in case the movie was to be a letdown. Which it was, but allow me to explain. It was a great movie. I was on the edge of my seat, so to speak, for the entire duration. But of course leave it to J.J. Abrams to not give away any answers at all when the movie is all over. I stayed through the credits hoping for something tagged onto the very very end with something, anything at all that would redeem this film and make it live up to all the hype. It failed.

I must repeat though, it was a great movie. My problem with it is that the hype, the marketing, the secrecy for that matter were totally unnecessary. It was just a movie. Nothing special happened whatsoever. And that’s why I’m mad.

The funniest ending possible would be, after an hour and a half of the monster destroying the city, the scene cuts. We see Hurley (from Lost) waking up quickly in a sweat. He says “Dude, what a weird dream”. Cuts to black. *Boom* sound effect and the LOST logo appears on the screen. Below that reads “Watch the 2-Hour Premiere Event Thursday Jan 31st at 8/7c on ABC”. And there you have it. Cloverfield can be a full length feature film plug for the new season of Lost.

What Is Cloverfield?

without comments

I missed a day. And I had such a good streak going on there. Dag nabbit!

Cloverfield MarketingThe answer to this post’s question/title is at the moment, I still don’t know. I opted against the various 12:01 am showings for a more reasonable time this evening. At a digital cinema no less. Which is an issue I would like to address.

I found it difficult to find a webpage specifically detailing the specifications of movie theaters in my area. With the whole “digital cinema” thing going on, DLP.com gives a list of theaters that support their digital cinema technology. However, you then have to go to something like MovieTickets.com to actually see a schedule. What I want is a thorough breakdown of the numerous theaters in my area. Actually a thoroughly technical breakdown. I’m talking
- Total number (and brand) of speakers.
- Possibly even a blueprint of the speaker layout.
- Number of seats, with a description of their cushioning/leg room/reclining/arm rest/etc.
- Projection systems available (not like any of that would make sense to me).
- Screen size. Length x Height style. None of this diagonal crap. And type of screen, I’m sure there are multiple types.
Mind you, this would need to be for each theater in the theater which should obviously be searchable by movie by movie time. So you should be able to look up your movie and time and see exactly what you’ll be getting yourself into (with even maybe some customer feedback comments). Had this website existed, I would have used it to find an awesome theater showing Cloverfield for tonight. I’ll jot something down after I see it. Maybe.

Are We Not Men?

I never thought I’d need earplugs at a Devo concert. Turns out, being super close to a speaker at ANY concert is considered “too loud” in my book.

Last night Devo performed at the MacWorld Blast Party at the Warfield in San Francisco. Good show, I must admit. Though, as mentioned, I was far to close to the speaker setup and was unfortunately sans-earplugs. They’re still ringing a bit this morning. My ears are.

From 10:00 to 6:00 today I will be attending the exhibit hall of the 2008 MacWorld Expo. Check apple.com for all the mac-related updates presented by Steve Jobs at the Keynote. One of which being the new Macbook Air. A super thin laptop without any form of optical drive! Yay! No watching DVDs on an airplane with this baby! I’ll rant later about the apple products and updates. In the meantime, enjoy the song “Whip It” performed by Devo from last night’s performance.

MacWorld Expo, Tomorrow

with 3 comments

MacWorldI wanted to jot something down here since I was on such a great roll with new posts. Today begins the MacWorld Expo in San Francisco. (Actually, I think it started yesterday with some talks, but) Today is the big day. Steve Jobs is giving his Keynote speech this morning, which will also be available for download from Apple’s website later today. As usual, there will probably be a bunch of cool new things that will be unveiled.

Anyway, I will be going to the exhibit hall tomorrow for the day as well as going to the MacWorld Party tonight. Expect pictures (maybe).

Netflix Unlimited Watch Instantly

with one comment

I really don’t have any complaints with my Netflix service. I started off as a trial and am now on the 1-at-a-time subscription for $8.99 a month. The subscription also includes 9 hours of “Watch Instantly” time per month. It looks like things are going to change. From San Jose Mercury News:

Girding for a potential threat from Apple Inc., online DVD rental service Netflix Inc. is lifting the time limits on how long most subscribers can watch movies and television shows over high-speed Internet connections.

The Associated Press has learned the change will become effective Monday, on the eve of Apple’s widely anticipated move into the movie rental industry. Although Apple hasn’t confirmed anything yet, Chief Executive Steve Jobs is expected to make it official during a presentation Tuesday in San Francisco.

Netflix is gearing up for the increased competition by expanding a year-old feature that streams movies over the Internet instead of making customers wait for their online rental requests to be delivered through the mail.

If they really want to compete with Apple, maybe they should first address their system requirements for their Watch Instantly web application: A computer running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or higher, or Windows Vista; Internet Explorer version 6 or higher. What about Mac users? Luckily I have an old, very terrible, slow, spyware-and-other-virus ridden, PC laptop that I’ve used to watch all of The Office seasons 1 and 2 (so far). But its a small monitor, and I have to listen to it using headphones. I have a nice mac. I want to watch movies on that. *Sad Face*

Six-In-A-Row!

without comments

Hooray! This post today makes a total of 6 consecutive days with a new post! I’m guessing, but, I think that’s a record for me.

The fact that I still haven’t added any pages to this website still amuses me. The default “About” page is accessible and still has no information whatsoever. There’s lots to do, lots to fix, lots to update. I really need a logo for “Distant Light” or “Distant-Light.com”. Anyone into graphic design with a shitload of time on their hands? Feel free to make something.

Insert random, unrelated, unprovoked picture here…
Morning

I’m going up to Petaluma today to visit with my cousins, two “sets” actually. My mom’s sister’s family (who live in Petaluma) and my mom’s brother’s family (who live in Sacramento). It’d be great to take some pictures, but my camera’s battery is dead and I’ve lost my charger somehow. I didn’t leave it in CT and its certainly not here. That’s one good thing of a small apartment, you can usually find things a lot easier.

Speaking of, I get the keys to my new place this week! The actual move-in date is 1.18.08, which happens to be the release of the new J.J. Abrams movie Cloverfield. I can’t wait, its going to be fantastic (I hope, I hope, I hope). I’m also super excited for The Hottie and the Nottie. I mean, who isn’t? This movie looks like pure gold. Sarcasm of course. Who comes up with these movie ideas?

Two things from yesterday that I just thought of. One was in the afternoon. I was walking to the bus and had made a phone call which had just clicked over to voicemail. I was talking, leaving my message, when I passed a homeless guy who basically jumped in front of me and asked for money. “I’m on the phone!”. Homeless or not, that’s rude I think. I was mid-speech. Anyway, that stuck with me later last night when I went to get groceries. I was walking home, carrying 4 heavy bags, listening to my iPod and I passed another homeless guy begging sitting down. Basically he just stuck his cup out and mumbled something or other as people passed. When I passed him though (clearly occupied, these bags were heavy) he didn’t even make eye contact or say anything. Makes sense, good manners. So I stopped, put my bags down and gave him $2. He was happy. Yay.

That’s all I’ve got for now I think. I can never end these “Personal” posts that well. Ready? <!–End–!>
