The Green Room

Last night at about 9:00 (midnight, east-coast time), I gave my good friend Jim a Happy Birthday call. Today, October 8th, is his birthday. Alas I was not the first, since he was with two other people at the time. They beat me to the punch after realizing who was calling at such a late hour. Anyway, we chatted for a bit. I heard stories from their recent trip to Northport and brief updates on how everyone in CT was doing. I also received some very troubling news. On Saturday September 20th, the Green Room closed.

The Green Room

I suppose we all knew this was coming. The Green Room was by far the best bar in/near Fairfield. Of course, “best” is a subjective term. To me, and my group of friends who would frequent the Green Room, the other bars in the area were loud, crowded, expensive and hosted a crappy clientele.

The Green Room was perfect. Most nights, we would be the only ones in there. Drinks were cheap (and strong). Any song we picked on the jukebox would play nearly instantly. The walls were lined with couches and other comfy chairs giving the place a “living room” vibe. They had board games and card games strewn about and a pool table that actually had an entire rack of balls (no dart board unfortunately - it’s only flaw). Occasionally, a local band would be performing for a very small audience. And now, it’s gone.

The thoughts had crossed my mind before: “How is this place still in business? We seem to be the only ones who come here regularly. Maybe we only come on their ‘off’ days. They’re probably much more busy other nights of the week.” I was wrong, dead wrong. It’s a shame that such a nice, respectable establishment is now gone. I am saddened.

  1. That place sounds awesome. I had seen that photo of yours before and thought it WAS a living room.

Also, it’s nice to read a post from you that doesn’t sound like “I’m too bored, tired, whatever to post anything so I’ll just put up two lines, there you go”.

    haha.

  2. Woohoo the back of my head made it into a blog post.

I’m going to miss that place and all the random games and hats and fun. :(

What was the name of that game you guys made up on the pool table?!?!

  3. Oh MAN! What a great game. That should be a blog post by itself. It’s called “Cinnamon Milk”.

The name comes from an episode of Stella where the group of guys are lingering around a coffee shop. They never buy anything and one of the guys (Michael Showalter) drinks Cinnamon Milk - a combination of the free cinnamon powder and milk used in purchased beverages.

Our game was playing a free version of pool which only used the cue ball (since it would always pop out, unlike the colored/striped balls. Nobody likes paying the $1.50 or whatever for a real game of pool). It involved trying to knock it into a pocket, while the other player would attempt to block using only his cue stick. Cinnamon Milk, haha!
